Coping with a big fish at the end of the 120mm-140mm sized minnows has always been a problem for most anglers.

Lures of this size generally come with 3 treble hooks in the size 4-6 range which spaces them out to prevent them from catching each other.

In order for the lure to swim properly, these hooks are constructed of light gauge wires which may not hold up very well against larger fish especially when you have no choice other than to battle it out with your quarry on high drag.

Considering the fact that our tropical fish are robust in the fight and they too, tend to congregate around snags. Landing these pesky guys are just a matter of luck, hoping that the hooks hold up and at the same time, the fight must not be pro-longed to prevent the hooks from opening up due to metal fatigue.

We all wish that our lures could hold heavier gauge hooks and at the same time, swim and perform in the same class as it would with the light gauge hooks fitted on.

So here comes the Sasuke 105. With 15mm being the difference between it's 120mm big brother that has taken our local luring scene by storm, I felt that this plug would be another revelation due to the slightly smaller profile. I spent some time testing this plug out and it did just as well to rival it's bigger brother in terms of catch rate, at the same time, proving deadly to the smaller fishes that tend to shy away from larger lures. 15mm it may be, but it will be all the difference in the world when the fish start to get picky.

The main thing that caught my attention was that this lure was designed to hold just 2 treble hooks. I was able to fit hooks of a heavier gauge such as the Decoy Wide Gap W-77 treble without significant impact on the lure's factory tuned swimming action. I felt significantly more confident each time a fish tapped my lure close to cover, knowing i have adequate power in reserve to turn it's head away from cover.

The Sasuke 105 is like a little fat bullet. It is extremely buoyant and after switching out the light gauge hooks, i noticed that the action of the plug was distinctively sharper and it even made the lure more stable.

I will continue testing it out on the usual suspects, this time with much more confidence knowing i can button down on my drag if the need arises.

Here is one of the local barramundi that fell prey to my new found weapon of choice !!!

Remember the Article featuring my dear friend Norman and his Ima Sasuke 140 (裂波)???

Not to mention his bust-offs and opened snap-locks? He is back with another report this time:

After the previous encounters with the lunkers, my dear friend has been frequenting this particular fishing ground in hope of landing one of those elusive dream monsters.

On this fateful night, he choose to fish a slow out-going tide, identifying the drop-off as the distinct terrain change in this particular fishing ground

After 30 minutes of fruitless casting, Norman decided to employ a different technique.

He would cast for maximum distance, work the lure back fast and stop the lure dead in it's tracks just before the drop-off. He would then allow it to hang motionlessly in the drop zone for a short moment before completely retrieving it slowly into the shallows.

After a couple of casts, he had a take so forceful it almost ripped out the rod from his hands due to the locked-down drag of his Stella.

The fish was too fast for Norman. It swam parallel along the drop-off, searching for a distinct cluster of rocks before surging right into it.

The rod snapped back. The line was cut off by the fish.

Losing his last Sasuke, he clipped on his next lure of choice which was the Ima Gyodo 130MD:

Employing the same technique and retrieval, he registered another hit but this time, the fish stood no chance against his tackle, it was not able to strip even an inch of line from his Stella.

The fish was a Mangrove Jack of 5.5 Pounds.

A very respectable fish by any standards but still not quite the quarry Norman was after...

Nonetheless it proved to be the only catch after another night of frustration.

The fish that his tackle didn't even stand a chance against still remains a mystery.

Catch Report: Ima Sasuke 120 (裂波) & Ima Sasuke 140 (裂波)

Good day all, here is the long overdued catch report from one of the very successful nights my friend and i spent out there testing the Ima Sasuke 120 (裂波) & Ima Sasuke 140 (裂波).

It was one of those nights when the Barramundi Bug bit. Furthermore, it didn't help when news of big, mean and angry Barramundi were raging actively. I received a call from my friend and we decided to head down for a short 2 hour session.

Armed with beefed up trebles and spilt rings on our Ima Sasuke 120 (裂波) & Ima Sasuke 140 (裂波), we did a final check on the tide before deciding to approach them at the steepest decline of the outgoing tide.

I chose the Ima Sasuke 140 (裂波) over the 120 as i prefer larger lures. I am a firm believer of bigger lures equate to bigger fish.

As usual, the Barramundi love to hang around sunken structure and drop-offs which are abundant in the area.

They poise themselves against the flow of the current and wait for unsuspecting baitfish to drift pass before engaging in short but aggressive chases to hit the baitfish hard.

"Poof ! Poof !" was the audio in the air on that cold and chilly night - they are around and feeding actively.

The excitement was too much to bear, i started making selective casts only targetting the boils created by surface feeding barramundi.

"ZZZzzzzzZZZ" Wee Lee's drag went off as his Sasuke 120 (裂波) was attacked. The fish hit on a slow retrieve with light twitches & pauses in-between.

After a short duel, the fish was landed and registered 7 pounds on the boga.

I resumed casting after the customary pho-taking and release of the fish.

Almost instantly, i felt a strong tug and an angry Barramundi was jumping right infront of me. I had hooked-up another as well !

This fish was slightly larger and harder to tame as it made deep runs, occasionally surfacing for that trademark aerial display and headshakes.

After a gruelling battle of 3 miniutes, i had the fish on it's side and totally exhausted, ready for landing.

It registered 12 pounds on the boga.

After releasing my fish, the Barramundi school seemed to be spooked and disappeared.

"ZZzzZZ" Wee Lee's drag was pouring out line suddenly and his rod was doubled over. I reeled up my line and went over to see if i could help. It was a good fish but there was no trademark aerial display. Instead, the fish was diving for the depths, trying to cut him off at the sunken structure.

Luckily, the drag on his Stella SW4000PG proved too much for the unknown fish. However, the fish still battled to the very last second and soon it revealed itself to be a good sized Malabar Grouper.

Suprise suprise, the Ima Sasuke 120 (裂波) is a shallow diving lure and again it proved to be irresistable to the bottom-dwelling Malabar Grouper.

After releasing the grouper, we were unable to register any hits on our lures.

Working the area and covering ground quickly, we reached the last sunken structure along the beach strip.

Making a diagonal cast over the sunken ruins of what used to be a jetty, i retrieved the lure quickly to draw reaction strikes out of holding fish.

As expected, i felt a tug and reacted with double strikes to secure the hook-up. The fish was smart, diving instinctively for the sunken ruins in an attempt to cut me off. I had no choice but to palm my spool and hope for the best.

Lucikly the fish stopped in it's tracks and decided to treat me to it's spectacular aerial displays. I knew it was over as the fish will tire out quickly.

Wee Lee landed the fish for me and it registered 10 pounds on the boga.

It was released unharmed to fight another day.

Repeated casts over the sunken structure proved fruitless and we decided to call it a night after our short and successful trip.

Catch Report: Ima Sasuke 140 (裂波) !!!

I recently received a local catch report from a close friend of mine.

He is known to be an extremely hardworking and intelligent angler who specializes in fishing under extremely tough conditions and yet one who never fails to produce results.

Another notable catch was his 12 pound Queenfish taken on Ima Keep 90S under similar conditions.

Here is his report on the Ima Sasuke 140:

Taking up a new challenge, our friend decided to go to a known and over-fished spot in search of old foes.

After being "bullied" by an unknown monster on a 20lb rated rod coupled with a Certate Hyper Custom 3000, our dear friend returned to the same spot the very next night, bent on revenge.

Ammunition of choice was the Sasuke 140. It provided the crucial casting distance, stability and rolling action to entice bites from these finicky gamefish.

Our friend has identified the prime window of the tide table during which these lunkers are actively feeding.

Confidence was high as he returned armed with a Stella 4000 and an Ima Sasuke 140 with beefed up hooks.

He began casting, paying close attention to the ebb and flow of the surrounding waters.

Almost instantly, he registered a hit.

Striking hard, the unknown fish immediately began stripping line effortlessly off his Stella 4000. Instinctively, the adversary used the strong current flow to it's advantage.

Ironically, buttoning down on the drag in a attempt to slow the fish down caused it to peel more line and at a higher speed. (the drag was orignally set at >6kg)

Events turned critical when the fish dived straight down, attempting to cut the line at the drop-off.

Left with no other choice, he high-sticked the rod and started pumping furiously in a bid to steer the fish away from it's destination.

Alas...... it wasn't the hooks nor his reel but the snap-lock that failed ultimately.

Disappointed with the technical failure, a fresh snap was tied on as he went in search of his second quarry with another Sasuke 140.

He didn't have to wait long to engage in battle again given the excellent fishing condition of the night.

This time, the lure was hit right after the lure had past the drop-off.

Short and quick strokes were applied to jack the fish up to the surface as soon as possible to avoid it gunning for the drop-off.

Instinctively, he felt that the fish didn't have the sheer brute strength and power of the previous two unknown lunkers.

Nevertheless, he was surprised that the fish was still able to strip line despite his high drag setting.

A 5 pound Mangrove Jack was landed shortly.

After the customary photo-taking session, the fish was released to fight another day.

He resumed casting but luck was not on his side again as he lost another fish due to the throwing of hooks after a brief tussle.

The night was concluded with partial success.

He has already marked the next "prime" night for fishing and remains hopeful to return with some pictorial contributions of the monsters lurking in the deep.

For now, let's wish him best of luck and our recognition of his perseverance !!!

Honey Trapping for Giant Herring !!!

December 2009

I felt a bump on my lure and struck hard. All hell broke loose as my reel screamed and my rod jerked downwards. My Shimano Stella 4000PG was tested fully by this most worthy opponent.

With little effort, the fish had already stripped 70 metres of 20lb line against a tight drag in just seconds. I prayed hard for the hooks to hold. Every time the fish jumped, it fell back into the water with a gigantic splash. There was nothing i could do but hold on and pray for the best.

As last, the fished stopped it's mad dash. I was gaining ground albeit rather slowly. I started to coax the fish in slow and steadily.

With a bit of mastery rod work against the pylons and lots of luck, we managed to land (and release) the biggest Giant Herring that i had ever seen in my life.

For 2 hours that night, we had almost non-stop reel screaming action with the Giant Herrings averaging 5 kilograms each but only 1 was landed. It was a one-sided battle with the anglers being brutalized.

A ridiculous amount of lures had already been lost in just 2 hours of fishing - we must have lost over 20 fishes that night, some of them larger than the one landed. Many were lost due to thrown hooks when they jumped. The Herring's mouth was extremely bony - which made it difficult to find a soft spot for the trebles to dig in.

The rough surface of the Herring's mouth made it worse as our 40lb fluorocarbon leaders were worn through many times.

Other casualties were due to the Herrings cutting the line when they ran against the barnacle-covered pylons supporting the dock.

The lure of the moment is the HoneyTrap 95S. It was simply made for the job. Fishing in approximately 8 metres of water with a steady current flow, the HoneyTrap was perfect for working the different depth ranges via steady control of it's sinking rate.

The Giant Herring were fast, crashing baitfishes at the surface before disappearing back into the depths again. It was a constant challenge to locate the exact depth these silvery speedsters were holding at.

I suspect we may have chanced upon a congregation of Herring which for some reason were harboring there at that particular time.

If my guess is correct, I will be putting up more pictures of these magnificent sportfishes at the end of every year.

Below is a general description of how to work the HoneyTrap 95S. I hope it will bring similar success to thinking anglers around the world:

The HoneyTrap sinks with an attractive shimmering action which alone, is sufficient to draw strikes. Never take your attention off when fishing the HoneyTrap as the strike might come any moment, especially on the drop.

Sink the lure, twitch it a couple of times and continue to let it sink. Repeat this action.

Make several fast cranks on the reel handle to imitate an escaping baitfish and let it sink again.

The trick to using the HoneyTrap is to impart sudden but short movements with plenty of pausing to allow the lure to shimmer while sinking.

It is a superb lure for fish holding in the depths right beside pylons or close to underwater structure, an area few conventional lures can reach and stay in.

On a constant retrieve, the lure sways with a narrow side-to-side action. This action works well in very clear waters, especially when targeting pelagic species such as Trevally, Queenfish & Mackerel.

I like to cast right into baitfish schools, let the lure sink till it is below the bait school, crank at a constant speed for several revolutions, allow it to sink before cranking again. If there is a predator feeding on the baitfish school, chances are it will take a shot at the HoneyTrap.

Because of prime areas the HoneyTrap can access, it is recommended to fish with slightly heavier tackle than usual. That includes upgrading your treble hooks and spilt rings to heavier-duty versions. There is an extremely high chance to lose your HoneyTrap fishing right next to structure when you hookup a big one as these fishes tend to dash instinctively for cover when they feel the hook.

Imagine hooking up a 10 kilo Barramundi or a 5 kilo Grouper right at the base of a pylon, there is no surprise to what the fish will do.

It will be exciting to see our local boys show off their catches at the end of these 2 months. Hopefully, we will get more of those anglers at the backstage out to show their stuff to the world as well. Yeah, you know who you are!!!

A brief introduction to the new models released :

Ima Nabarone 150F - A larger version of the highly rated Nabarone 125. This lure is squarely targetted at big barramundi, big barracuda, big groupers. Note the emphasis on big, BIG LURE = BIG FISH. Surprisingly, it is also one of the most successful lure ever proven on PEACOCK BASS here locally, something not many anglers would have thought of. We are talking about TEMENSIS (cichla temensis) here, the larger variation, not the Butterfly Pavon (cichla ocellaris). Yes, we already have pictorial reports of Cichla Temensis on this lure. Yes... MANY... BIG...

Ima Skimmer - As its name suggests, this lure skims on the surface, imitating a frantic baitfish trying to escape. Slow down a bit and it darts side to side, much like an escaping sardine or milkfish. The magic of this lure is the ability to cast extremely long distances despite it's relatively light weight and it's minimal impact on the water prevents it from spooking wary fish. In saltwater, I would see this lure applicable for small pelagics from shore, queenfish, small trevally, small mackeral. Already proven to be deadly on the butterfly variation of peacock bass locally, it will be interesting to see how this lure works on the other species of our freshwater impoundments.

Ima Roumba - This outstanding lure is perfectly sized to appeal to most of our tropical lure munchers. Extremely versatile from working the surface to subsurface. This lure is the definition of an invitation for trouble. It rolls temptingly near the surface creating a wake and controlled turbulence that lets every other fish in the area know of its presence. This lure will definitely be a BIG BANG when used in snakehead ( Toman ) fishing. I also recommend it for barramundi and groupers in shallow water. In clear water, this lure will be truely outstanding. Like magic, it has the ability to 'call' up fish from deeper water with its distinct swimming action. Pulsating attacks from big fish on this subsurface lure will shake the hearts of many anglers in the years to come.

Ima Sasuke 75 - The baby of the Sasuke family. Targetting the same fishes as the Sasuke 95. The 75 is even more lively, more responsive, more appealing. Perfect swim depth, perfect profile and size, perfect tight 'SASUKE' trademark action. Producing catches immediately upon introduction, the sasuke 75 will quickly be installed as a staple in every angler's tackle arsenal.

Ima Komomo II - An extremely versatile shallow diving minnow. Crank it in slowly with your rod tip high up and it works almost like a roumba or cast and retrieve it like any other jerkbait. This lure swims even shallower than it's predecessor, the komomo 125-SF. Ideal for casting over weedbeds in the shallows and yet effective at fish-searching in sand flats, this might be what you'll need to fish that particular spot u once thought was unfishable to lures !! In freshwater will see this lure work on snakehead and Peacock bass that are playing just beneath the surface that are just shy of striking topwater baits.

Needless to say, the lures mentioned above can cast great distances as with all IMA lures. The high quality characteristics remains the same.

A true story of lure fishing imagination....

Recently, I received a catch report regarding one of my friend's friend. This took place in one of the commercial fishing ponds located in the east side of Singapore ( Ed's pond!! ). Its normal to catch fish in a fishing pond, But to catch above average fish on a consistent basis is perhaps the epitome of pond fishing success. Now this guy, he not only catches outstanding fish, but the methods he use are so unorthodox that it will make you wonder what was on his mind at that very moment. Using the IMA GANPEKI jig, he simply casts out and works his jig on a super slow retrieve. His catches to date includes golden trevally, big golden snappers, giant trevallies, even big groupers, basically all the bigger and better fish that they release into the pond. Accordingly, he normally hits the better fishes on his technique. Poor chap loses quite a lot of fish due to busted lines.... 'fish too big'.... thats what he tells me.

A point to note here is that we recommended the lures, but ultimately, it is the angler's own effort and imagination beyond that produced the successful results. There is a limit to how far I am willing to recommend people to use IMA lures for whatever purposes I think they are good for, and I would really have to cross all my fingers and contort my face to recommend someone to go light jigging in a small fishing pond!!!!!

In lure fishing, the art of "OPENING THE LOCK" to hidden success gives the angler so much more satisfaction than actually catching the fish itself. Have you ever wondered why bass anglers in other parts of the world can be so obsessed even after catching what seems like number 10000 of the same species of fish in their lifetime? The anglers pride and joy is actually found in unlocking the secrets to make them bite under different conditions, different habitats, time and time again. That would be the true mindset of the LURE ANGLER.

Ima Singapore is now officially linked to the Ima Japan Website.

Over the last 10 months, we have received many kind emails from anglers all over the world who are curious and surprised about the lure fishing scene in Singapore. Many of them envious of the size and variety of fish that can be caught in our waters. I am proud to say that our local anglers' showcase of fish species and the size of the catches are OUTSTANDING by WORLD STANDARDS.

The results are very impressive for the very fact that we are just a small urbanised island approximately 25 x 50 kilometres, with about 5 million people co-existing together. With much of the coastline off limits to fishing, even I scratch my head sometimes when we look at our own fishing results under such tough conditions.

A big THANK YOU to all contributors for your photos. WELL DONE BOYS!!!!
